e-Learning Expo

August 2013

On the 22nd of August, 2013, Tauriko School opened its doors to parents, and teachers from other
schools, to come and see how computer technology is being used to help students in their learning.

A large number of parents attended the lunchtime digital citizenship presentation from NetSafe Representative, Sean Lyons.
If you missed the opportunity to be there, his talk has been uploaded in two parts, below:

Visitors were then invited to walk around the school and witness the children using technology to support their work in a variety of curriculum areas. They were encouraged to ask questions of the students as they wandered into classrooms.
Some of the learning experiences which were being demonstrated included:

Junior Students:
  • using ipads and teaching websites to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical and literacy strategies
  • applying their knowledge by answering questions on a class blog
  • being creative with pic collage on ipads, or tux paint on desktop computers
  • storywriting on ipads and publishing on computers
  • observing the teacher using the big screen to model classroom activities

Senior Students:
  • video–conferencing and skyping with tutors, experts and other students to enhance their learning
  • responding to writing feedback they have received on a shared Google document
  • selecting and reflecting on artefacts for their learning e-portfolio
  • using the internet and then their class blog to share theirviews and respond to the views of others
  • creating videos and then QR codes to share a one-minute summary of a news item of interest
There was a lot of positive feedback from visitors, and we hope that everyone enjoyed an insight into the use of ICT  in the classroom at Tauriko School.

Waihi Mine Trip

Week 5, Term 2

In Week 5 of term 2 Rooms 11, 12 and 13 went to the Waihi Goldmine. We learnt about how the mine works. This was part of our inquiry about sustainability; we are exploring the following question: Can we continue to use the earth’s resources without threatening further generations? We learnt about the company’s sustainable practices and their plans for the future. We all created a key chain with symbols to remember the gold mine. We all got to hold gold and silver, it was very heavy. Phil who works at the mine helped us to scan QR codes and make powerpoints. We would like to thank all the parents and helpers on this trip. We all loved the day!

Aongatete Bush Camp

April 2013

The Year 3 and 4s headed to camp in Week 9. We stayed for one night and had fun exploring the bush. We went on bush walks, swam at the river crossing, did weaving and leaf rubbings, and slept in dorms! The biggest challenge for some was the confidence course but for others it was staying away from home for the first time. Here is a PicCollage made by Ethan.
